Diversity Sourcing and Sharing Diversity - My Random Thought

Seeds produced by farmers are the most important source of planting materials in the world. Though these seeds are not a part of the formal seed sector, however, the value they carry as a part of the indigenous seed is immeasurable. The importance of farmer-produced seed varies between crops, farms, regions, and countries. In most developing countries, almost 60-100% of the seeds planted are farmer produced or exchanged. Similarly in Bhutan, in the absence of a formal seed sector, the major source of seeds for Bhutanese farmers revolved around farm-produced seeds or exchange within and among the communities. However, in recent times, traditional seed varieties have disappeared at an alarming rate. The seeds that we have five years ago no longer can be found in a community, thus, forget about asking for seeds from decades ago. Being aware of the impacts of climate change on agriculture, it’s no denying fact that agriculture sector is somehow a victim of climate change. In days ...

Beyond Rice & Maize: Random Thought of a Struggling Researcher

Image
As we begin the journey of NUS, we look forward to a day when we can proudly say “Neglected No More: Traditional Crops for Sustainable Livelihoods”  “Enhancing crop productivity and ensuring food self-sufficiency and food security has been tied along with every one of us related to agriculture. I always associated achieving rice and maize self-sufficiency to food self-sufficiency which was too specific when I chew back now. We have eaten enough share of rice and maize now. Having tagged myself as an agriculturalist, it’s awkward to have such a thought. It is time now we think beyond rice and maize. There are other cereals which are in the verge of vanishing from the locality. Our neglected and underutilized crops should be given some importance. Thanks to FAO for coming up with such a project to rediscover those forgotten crops and how fortunate we are to be a part of it. Despite being an agrarian country with diverse cereal varieties, somehow, in the rush of enhanci...

Forever grateful

It was a year ago..... When I counted my Blessings like never before.....  " I was sitting with a blank paper in my hand getting ready to map out 2018. Then a thought on the outgoing year came flooding. It would be unfair on my side if I don't look back at 2017. Yes!!, it had been a hectic and stressful year. Somewhere I felt it more like a dream of summer midnight. The thought of travelling during monsoon, the undulating boulders, sleepy muddy roads and road blocks now and then still scares me. There had been a time when I cried to bed, cursing myself for what I was doing. However, somewhere the little self-trust within kept me alive. As September began, I remember sleeping among the books and papers flooding around me. Before I could at least enjoy a single summer day, fall has already rolled around. The  winding up of summer made my heart heavier. Truly the summer of 2017 was too short. As October bided its goodbye, the cold air started spreading around. The feel o...

“Thinking Nutrition: Adding Quinoa to your Life”

Image
" Super-foods have existed for centuries, but it's only recently these foods have gained their popularity and position......" Just look at the plate in front of you during any meal and think for a while?? Ask yourself if you are taking in enough nutrition? Now come back to reality, yes!! It’s true that our diet is mostly composed of rice and very small portion of vegetables. We are hardly taking in any nutrition. Considering the fact that without agriculture there is little food or nutrition, agriculture has come a long way serving and feeding the planet. However we cannot deny the fact that, the availability of food from agriculture does not ensure good nutrition. Thus, to bridge the gap of poor nutrition, a very archaic crop has been introduced in Bhutan. Although, our ancestors have grown this grain, yet the popularity was hardly into existence, until few years ago (2015), when few varieties from Peru were introduced in the country for evaluation. This ol...

Agriculture as I see it......

Image
Hungry and Naked, that’s where life would be on the earth without Agriculture. Somewhere, I have choose to become an Agriculturalist; serving and feeding the people which gives me immense satisfaction and happiness. It was a choice I made some years ago without any thought on how my future will look ahead with this profession. Growing up in a country side, both my parents were farmer, thus Agriculture and farming wasn’t new to me and nor I am fresh to this profession. It was then I realized how beautiful it was to be born as a country girl. Back then farming and agriculture were one profession ignored by many youth. It isn’t a simple occupation any one can opt for. Being an agriculturalist is being a farmer which requires a true dedication, immense sacrifices, and patience. I have chosen it without any reflection and thought on how I could carry out my profession. Today as I chew back and look over myself, I feel contended with what I have decided years ago. The happines...

Spring is here...

Image
Look around and you will find yourself gazing at the beautiful peach flowers. The feel of warm spring breeze against your face, people in sleeveless shirts and shorts, and a break for your Uniqlo jackets, finally spring is here .Today the first day of spring 2015. The eye pleasing peach flowers dominates the start of the season. The light shower washes away the dust that winter has left. Spring comes with happiness, love and freshness. As I celebrate my birthday at the start of the season, the season will always shower me with immense love and luck. I always had fond memories with the season. Spring, the time for our farmers to go back in the field. Being an agriculturalist, spring is a special season. Everything can wait but not agriculture. Yes! Spring is for us. Here in the east farmers are keenly sowing Corn and back in the western part of our country the summer vegetable nursery are right on the track. Spring is the season for us to work with the soil and enjoy the beauty ...

The weeping Brother

Welcome 2015!! It took me almost a month to come up with my first post.   “Was it him that never wanted to see his dying siblings, or was it his heart that never had the courage to bid them farewell or was it the influence of other that made him to stay away from all his siblings”… he was a brother who never had the chance to face his sibling at all their good and bad times. Blood is thicker than the water, a universal saying which sometime proved wrong!!! In the recent time, I came across a person who lived the life of a lonesome despite having numerous siblings. A brother to six other siblings, he was the third eldest among them. Those were the days when they ate over a pot of rice and played in the same ground. Life  isn't  that easy to lead. Every new day takes its turn and land up with something new. More than three decades ago he became completely isolated from his own siblings. What is the use of living when you don’t have time to share you moments wit...

Flashback … as I rewind my 2014

I would have never loved 2014 if I didn’t fall in love with the year. The year has given me so much of everything. It had been a year of complete experiences and challenges. Today, the 31 st of December, the New Year eve, it gives me utmost joy, happiness, sadness, and many beautiful memories to cherish. As I walk into the brand new year, there are many special moments to be cherished which I never want to erase out of my mind. The first days of 2014 started with my festival Lomba. My last lomba celebration with my most loved uncle. Who would have ever thought that it would be my last Lomba with him, yes! For now I am contended as I didn’t miss to attend that day with my family. It was a bitter experience yet the demise taught me to be stronger and brave. For now I would say the year made me to be more accountable and stronger. There had been the times where I completely fell in love with every bit of 2014. Those moments which I wish to freeze it forever. The immense support fro...

Thank You Holland; Forever in My Heart :) :)

Image
It was 12:05 pm (Thai standard time) 13 th of September 2014 when I travelled to the Netherlands from Bangkok. It was no fun being on a flight for 11 hours esp. when you are alone. The evening of that day I reached Schiphol International airport, Holland. The sun was brightly up in the sky and the beautiful plain stretch unceasing in front of me. Here at Holland I was lodged at one of the most beautiful location in the entire Holland; the Scheveningen Haven in the Hauge. The beautiful North Sea lies just in front of our apartment. Yes! Every day here had been a good surprise for me. I never missed a chance to visit the super crowded Amsterdam, the world’s second largest harbor; the Rotterdam and some other cities in Holland. Fairy tales only happen in dream or movies; but this time it wasn’t any more. I found myself standing under the gigantic Effile tower which was a dream come true. Visiting Paris was what I have always wanted to do in my life. It was fun exploring the histori...

Autumn in My Heart

Image
The touch of leaves falling over you, the feeling of chill breeze brushing against your cheeks, yeah! Finally the fall is here. Back home the Blessed Rainy Day is the indication of the last monsoon and the start of a new season. I was walking along the beach of Scheveningen here in the Hauge and watching the waves play with the sand. A group of granny playing on the beach distracted me and I was gazing them with a deep thought. They were living their youthful days. It just reminded me that age is just a numerical but inside, our heart never grows old. I went into the sea to feel the waves but then the peace environment took me into a thought. A thought of my late uncle came ringing in my mind. Today was his 49 th day and I still couldn’t believe that he is no longer with us.  I smiled through tears chewing over my days with my late uncle. The last autumn, I remember us together talking over a cup of tea. At the end it is just the memories that can live and will be valued for...

My Journey to vegetarianism

Every time you sit on the table for your meal, there is always a choice between kindnesses over cruelty. It’s never that easy to say no to meats. Sometime I just wonder how cruel we are; we never bothered to think over what is in our plate in front of us. There are some who cannot dine without a single meat menu and it has become a usual routine. In the present world, there are plenty of options and choices of foods for vegetarian. Why eat others, when we can’t bear the pain of a slightest cut on our body. This is just my thinking. In my case, it’s a different story. I never enjoyed eating meat. It doesn’t mean I am a religious or an animal lover. It was just a natural choice. I aren’t a vegetarian, I do eat dried meat like dry fish and Sikaam but not always. I haven’t tasted any other menu than those mentioned. A year ago I had bidden good bye to Sikaam and just a month ago I stopped the very appetitezer; dry fish. I find eggs too dirty to eat and that childhood notion has helped ...

ZZZz... Zhemgang

Image
Ascending the lonely road of Wangdigang, I could feel the warmth and smell the land of Khengpas. It was my first time travelling beyond Trongsa. Despite waking up and eating at an odd hour, I always enjoyed travelling and experiencing new adventurous. My affinity for travelling goes back to the day when I first stepped the land of eastern Bhutan. In the recent year travelling has become my biggest passion and hobby. Truly I am captivated by the beautiful places within our country. Zhemgang, a place located in the heart of Bhutan, is a place that I always wanted to see. I never had a thought of being in this place even for a while. When an idea about an official program in Zhemgang was raised, I volunteered to do the task. I have seen the place in a popular BBS programme; Nazhoen Express. It is a beautiful and a silent place. Its moderate weather can make any one fall in love with it. I just visited Trong and as expected it was a lively village. Lots of my old mates have groom...

Just a Thought....

Image
Behind every girl, there is a strong big brother supporting her all the way….  A  friend of mine posted as her Facebook status. Wish if it is true for all… I was born in a family surrounded by sisters. My early day’s revolved around my sisters. Both to my left and right, all I could feel and see were my sisters. I was never given a chance to feel and share that bond of a Brother- Sister. Sometime, a thought of not having my own brother makes me sick at heart. Having a brother is like having your own super hero by your side. I have always looked upon a brother as a caring and understanding personality. Having a sister is completely different. She is a wholesome of a mother figure and a friend. She can shower you with immense love. Most of My friends are blessed with supportive and caring brother. I have seen them sharing a great bond. Last winter I spent some time with my friend Karma and her brothers’ family. I was just amazed to see the bonding. She is truly blessed...

Knowing the bloggers on Blog......

I have seen Madam Rekha’s post about e- conference of bloggers. Though I am not a good blogger to be part of it yet I have a blog in which I blog, so I really liked the idea of the bloggers conference. I may be the last blogger to respond. Just my thought on this Rainy and Gloomy day

“If you ever want to love a person, never love in haste and doubt. It can hurt people. Love unconditionally so that you won’t regret. At the end how much you have loved matters the most.” Every day many heart breaks and many get joined together. It happen all because of a word called love. Everyone is meant to be loved and everyone should deserve to be loved unconditionally. There is no harm in loving a person and neither its sin to love somebody; however what matter here is how true and completely you love the person. It is always good to be loved by someone whom you love too so that it won’t remain one sided. “Some says when a man loves a woman usually it lasts forever” and “when a woman loves a man, it’s the best feeling in the world”… just imagine if its from both side than it would be the best feeling." Love" is  a word for which people can do anything.  The boring and gloomy weather today makes me talk on this Word. Yeah! it is for Love we live. Love u...

Hostel life and ghost incidents.....

Life in a boarding school is always mixed with some fear. The late night ghost story had been there ever since I joined the school. However, we never know whether it is fact or just a fake story. Before joining UDHSS, I have heard my sisters talking about ghost in hostel and I would humbly listen to those stories which later made me to fear hostel life. When the time came for me to join boarding school, I backed off recalling those stories, and however, I had to stay in hostel as there was no other alternatives. Every night for me was a heart attack, though I share my bed with my elder sister. I believe in ghost and I fear ghost, yet I love listening to ghost and horror story. Many incidents occurred in our school and every time when light goes we would gather together and hot talks will begin. No one in the room would sleep fearing ghost. I have also experienced and underwent some incident. It was a night of cold November 2007. It was almost the end of our academic year; most of th...
